Lucca’s Walls - About us
We are a group of colleagues and friends drawn to research who have chosen the identifying logo History in the Making. We come from a variety of professions and academic disciplines although all of us are particularly interested in urban history, an essential tool also for understanding the character of cities today. Some of us work in universities, others (archaeologists, architects, archivists, historians, scholars of modern and contemporary literature, graphic designers, and media-producers) engage primarily in research. Several of us belong to the varied and interesting world of history buffs.
The group’s mission is to propose, design, and generate cultural products (books, exhibits, catalogs, multimedia) linked to major topics on the urban and social history of early modern and contemporary Italy.
The group organizes and carries out various projects, from time to time, based upon relevant topics and resources available. It already has to its credit, for example, the exhibit and catalog (M. Pacini Fazzi ed.) “Lucca e Le mura. Itinerari del Risorgimento” [http://percorsi-risorgimentali.comune.lucca.it/] carried out in 2012 ,on behalf of the Administration of the city of Lucca on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy with the valued collaboration of our late lamented friend Romano Silva.
A few of the members of History in the Making are presently busy organizing a conference to be held at the Gabinetto Vieusseux (Florence, Palazzo Strozzi) on the figure of Vincenzo Malenchini and his role in the Risorgimento. The project falls under the jurisdiction of the initiatives of SAGAS (University of Florence) and has obtained the patronage of the cities of Livorno, Collesalvetti and of the Fondazione Spadolini in Florence. The participation of important scholars of the Risorgimento and noted Italian journalists is anticipated. Another part of the group additionally is occupied with an international initiative with the city of Nanjing for an exhibit on the walls of Florence that will take place in the Chinese capital of culture under the patronage of the city of Florence and the University of Florence. It is concerned then with studies and projects connected to the celebration of Firenze capital in collaboration with l’Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito Italiano and l' Istituto Geografico Militare di Firenze.
The members of the group led by Profs. Carla Romby and Carla Sodini (Dip. SAGAS-University of Florence) include Arianna Adorni, Antonio Bertini, Simona Bartolomei, Luci Fortunato, Graziella degl’Innocenti, Gioela Massagli, Giampaolo Mattonai, Elisabetta Ricciardi, Enrico Romiti, and Leonardo Solari.
Since most of the members of History in the Making come from Lucca or, in the course of their studies became interested in topics related to the city, it was almost inevitable that this urban center would be the focus of their interests especially this year, 2013, during which the 500th anniversary of the initial construction of the late-Renaissance walls will be celebrated.
As a tribute to Lucca and the history of its urban circuit of walls, the group has decided to open this web space with the aim of making its work accessible to the public and of promoting an important discussion among the citizens of Lucca on the history of the city walls and their public and individual significance. It also hopes that the “Lucchesi nel mondo,” who have contributed so much in the past and in the present to the positive image of the city, will also be able to take part in this discussion.
